Telephone system signal indicator

Telephone system signal indicator

Results course “Embedded Systems”
Single project 4/17

Together with the Rheinbaben workshop in Bottrop, we have decided to  work on a project that allows the employees at the headquarters to make undisturbed telephone calls. Currently there is a wired telephone installed to answer calls. This is connected to a special headset, which allows employees to easily accept calls. As soon as an incoming call is accepted on the headset, the receiver goes up and the call is answered. As this process is barely visible and the phone is installed behind the reception it cannot be seen, whether the employees are currently busy on the phone.

Our idea is to install a signal display, which we want to place visibly for everyone on the wall. This signal display is meant to signal by flashing, whether the employees are busy or not. Our first idea also included a mobile display mounted on a kind of clip, to attach it easily to the clothing. But our users advised against it, so we did not pursue the idea any further. We were recommended to try a solution without major intervention in the installed equipment, which allowed us to develop 2 possible solutions. Our first idea has detected a conversation directly through the cable, but this would be an intrusion into the existing system. That is why we opted for a reed contact, which is attached to the phone.

More details about the project can be found in the wiki of the HRW FabLab:
