Noise notifications for deaf people

Noise notifications for deaf people

Results course “Embedded Systems”
Single project 6/17

Deafness or impaired hearing confronts individuals with elementary problems. Important auditory signals, such as alarm signals, are not or only weakly detected. This might have severe consequences, especially in emergency situations. Apart from emergency situations, everyday conditions are significant as well: a knock on the door, a running tap or an approaching thunderstorm are just a few example. To compensate this, the developed system decides whether or not to notify the user. For this purpose, all ambient noise is continuously recorded by a microphone and analyzed. The program examines the auditory signals and decides whether the user is notified by text message.

In this wiki entry you learn what motivated the development of the project, how the project evolved over time, the feedback that was collected and how you can implement and build the project yourself. The code is publicly available on GitHub and can be used free of charge under the GNU General Public License v3.0.

To offer safety to deaf people in emergency situations, manufacturers offer light warning systems, vibration mats and above-average noisy fire detectors. These systems can be tailored to personal needs, but previous solutions are significantly more expensive and definitely not really mobile. This prototype can cost-effectively, efficiently and effectively replace the currently commercial available systems .
