Bloons

Results course “Embedded Systems”
Single project 3/17

As part of the Embedded Systems module, the BLOONS project was developed in cooperation with the Rheinbabenwerkstatt Bottrop. The result of the project consists of two prototypes, which allow users with different impairments to sort balloons and pack them into plastic bags independently. The first prototype focuses on the support for the sorting, the second one allows the packing of the balloons with one hand by opening the bags and keeping them open.

In the Rheinbabenwerkstatt Diakonie balloons with different colors and shapes need to be sorted and packed in bags for retailers. This is a challenging task for people with cognitive and physical disabilities. Assigning the proper balloons to be packed as well as opening and filling the bag with spasticity in the hands or only one functioning hand turns out to be difficult. For this purpose models have always been created on paper in the past, so employees knew how to sort the balloons. Some of the impaired were forced to work in teams of two together, because the bags cannot be filled with only one functioning hand. The aim of this project is to create a device that allows the impaired to independently assign and pack the right balloons.
