University of Wuppertal / Institute SIKoM

The Institute for Systems Research of Information, Communication and Media Technology (SIKoM) of the University of Wuppertal puts the study of complex systems, the study of the relationships, dependencies and changes as well as the consequences for economy and society at the center of its research, development and research transfer concepts. An interdisciplinary and networked system research approach is pursued.

In line with the consistent realization of innovation research, that in a sustainable innovation ecosystem not only the technical-economic factors are decisive, the so-called “quadruple-helix” approach forms the framework for the work on the SIKoM. This concept extends the traditionally focused “triple-helix”, consisting of state, science and business, to a fourth dimension: civil society. This integrates social, regional and cultural contexts explicitily into the system.

In Emscher-Lippe4, the SIKoM pursues the goal of promoting the development of innovative strategies for disseminating digital literacy and developing a FabLab strategy for the Emscher-Lippe region, which can serve as a blueprint for other regions. In particular, the focus is on strengthening the cooperation of relevant actors from industry, science, politics and society, as well as supporting the establishment of sustainable cooperation relationships and structures.
